“Make no mistake about it,”
said head coach, Bill Granche, “we didn’t defend any title. We earned a new
one. These young men came together as a team in a way I haven’t seen in many
seasons. They deserve all the credit in turning a 30 point defeat to ECC in
April into a 23 point win.
It was mostly about senior
leadership with guys like Frank Barber, James Swanson, Shane Krise and Cory
Briendel who won three events. The hurdlers swept the 110s with Alex
Anderson and Jon Prechtl, the sprinters dominated with the help of Kyle
Schneider, sweeping the 200. Jeff Gleixner winning the pole vault with
support from Kyle Bish didn’t hurt. Our strength in the distance events with
Cody Foster and freshman, Gideon Wolfel enhanced our depth on the track. The
jumpers were led by Cory’s triple jump win taking the event with his final
leap and freshman, Trenton Schrieber nailed a third place finish there.
From the seniors on down,
it was a team win and we hope to continue our momentum into the district
championship on Wednesday in Brookville.”
Girls
First I would like to
congratulate the St. Marys boys for their victory today and also the ECC
girls' for there impressive win in today's meet. Although second place
is never quite as rewarding as first place, I have to say that I am
pleased with the girls' results in the county meet. Some of our
athletes were really asked to stretch their limits today and work out of
their comfort zone and I truly believe that every member of the team did
just that. I would like to acknowledge that impressive results of Kayla
Hoohuli who led the girls' team with two first place finishes and two
2nd place finishes. I would also like to take the time to mention Sloan
Foster, who ran the marathon of track and field running a total of four
miles in todays meet and placing in three of the four events. Kelsey Wendel
also ran a gutsy race taking over second place in the two mile in the
last lap.
I am very proud of our girls today both on
the track and in the field. Our team is really working together. They
have slowly formed a support system for eachother, and finally realize
what it means to be on a team. It is getting to the point of the season
now where you are looking toward the finish line with mixed emotions.
you are sad for all the seniors that will be moving on and excited for
what is to come for all the new talent. With the district meet next
week I predict that our girls' will be in the best form of the season
and will come home with a lot of personal records.
