Dear Parents,

Your child is working in the SRA corrective reading program that is at his or her level in decoding and comprehension. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we will be using this program to:

Build word attack skills

Build phonic skills

build word recognition skills

build vocabulary

build comprehension skills

building oral reading fluency

When a student in level B2 misses a lesson, they will be required to complete a homework lesson that is related to the lesson that was missed. The first page the student can complete independently. The second page is a story passage that the student is to read aloud to someone at home. This activity provides practice on speed and accuracy. You will need a digital watch or a kitchen timer so that you can time them for exactly one minute. Mark any errors that are made.

Here are the kinds of errors to count:

saying the wrong word or mispronouncing a word

adding a word

leaving a word out

adding an ending to a word (for example ,reading "plays" for play)

leaving off an ending (for example, reading "start" for started)

not stopping at the end of an sentence

rereading part of a sentence

At the end of one minute, stop the student. At the bottom of the page, write the number of words read in one minute and the number of errors.

Sign at the bottom of the page. The student should return the two-page homework assignment to school on the next school day.

Remember to be patient. Students who try hard need to know that they are improving. Your assistance each day will help the student improve. The more practice the student receives, the faster the student will become a better reader.

If a student in level C misses a lesson, they will complete an independent worksheet on comprehension of an informational passage.

The novels that we will be reading this year are Number the Stars and Flowers for Algernon. On Thursdays I will read a chapter to the students. During the reading we will address vocabulary and comprehension. After reading a chapter the students will write a chapter summary. On Fridays, we will do progress monitoring, work on a comprehension sheet, and assign vocabulary for the next chapter.

It is very important that you, as a parent are involved, in your child's reading process. Please encourage your child to read and give a lot of praise. Read my page on How Parents Can Help?.

Thank you,

Mrs. Mancuso
