The method of guiding reading can be used to encourage students to go back and re-read the text to support their answers to questions.
1. Create a series of six-eight questions that, when
asked, move students from the beginning of the chapter (book) to the end of the
chapter (book).
2. Pose the questions prior to reading. Clarify
questions as necessary.
3. Assign silent reading.
4. After reading, conduct a discussion based on the
before reading questions. Students
should come to the discussion prepared with the organizer. (Two organizers are available below.)
5. Students are encouraged and reminded to answer
questions in their own words.
6. After answering the questions in their own words,
students are invited to re-read a portion of the text that supports
their answer.
