KWL PLUS (Know – Want to Know – Learned)
is a thinking-reading strategy that can be used with fiction or
non-fiction. The PLUS has been added to
the original KWL to encourage the use of categorization and summarization.
1. Before
reading, readers consider and record what they know about a book, subject, or
topic
2. What
they need or would like to know is completed prior to or during reading.
3. What
was learned is completed after reading.
4. Encourage
students to categorize information in the W or L columns.
5. Consider
using the categories and learned information to create a group summary.
