Strategy Definitions

After reading, effective readers can retell, summarize, and evaluate text they have read.

1.    Retelling:  the reader’s ability to comprehensively recount information from text.  This information is organized around text elements (characters, setting, problem, etc.)

2.    Summarization:  the reader’s ability to condense the major ideas and some details into an abbreviated form.

3.     Evaluation:  the reader’s ability to purposefully integrate selected information from the text with their own prior knowledge and react to it.
