 The Reading Book Story (Anthology):

The weekly book story is usually difficult for the average fifth grader to read alone. Feel free to review the weekly story with your child and ask questions about the story to increase comprehension. We will read all stories together in school and also listen to the story on CD or read again in small groups before the comprehension test is given on Friday.  Students are permitted and encouraged to look up the answers to test questions in their books.

Spelling Words:

New words are introduced each week. Practice saying and spelling these words, orally. Writing the words also provides excellent practice, since they will be written on the test. Spelling words offer a great opportunity to play games with your child. A pretest will be assigned as homework on Tuesday night to help students review.  The test will be given on Thursday.  We will start to look at the new words on Friday of each week so that students may practice over the weekend if they wish.

Math Facts:

Continue practicing the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.  Flashcards are an excellent tool to use to practice the facts. Your child can use flashcards alone or with your help. Make studying FUN by playing games! Our goal is to know the answers to all 100 facts in 5 minutes!

We will also be working on other topics throughout the year. Homework may be sent home to review what was taught that day. It is very important that your child pays attention and focuses on what is taught in class. This will make completion of homework assignments much easier.

Our goal in Math is to be prepared for the PSSA tests.

Science and Social Studies:

Occasionally work is sent home for these subjects. Anytime that we are preparing for a test, a study guide will come home to help prepare for it.  Please note that I teach science and Mrs. Porkolab teaches social studies.

Math Facts Review

The key to learning the Facts is practice!

  • Review the facts daily.
  • Pick the ones that give you trouble to concentrate on, rather than always practicing them all.
  • Keep your flashcards in your pocket, so you can pull them out and review anywhere or any place. (You won't need help to do this!)
  • Time yourself, or get someone else to time you.
  • Try to beat your time as you begin to learn them better.
  • Explore the sites below, by clicking on the images for practice.
  • Have fun as you become a master of the facts!!!
