Assessment Question:*
1. Paper/Pencil:** What is the difference between fiction and nonfiction?
Answer:** A fiction book is make-believe while a nonfiction book is based on facts.
2. Performance Question:** When taken to the school library, students will select an example of a fiction and nonfiction text, and be able to identify each specifically.
Assessment Tool:** Student mastery will be demonstrated by correct identification of selected texts.
Activity: Review the difference between fiction and nonfiction, then ask students what they think a realistic fiction book is. (Students would respond that it is a fiction story that could really happen). Read the realistic fiction story, Matthew and Tilly, in which two friends begin to fight and call each other names because one of them accidentally breaks the other’s purple crayon. After reading the story, ask students to describe how they would feel if they had been teased or called names by a friend. Pair students up and have them role-play the situation in which Matthew breaks Tilly’s crayon. Instead of fighting, however, have the students find a better way Matthew and Tilly could have solved their argument by talking through their problem.
