Assessment Question:*
1. Paper/Pencil:** What qualities
are needed for an effective class discussion?
Answer:** Taking turns,
listening to others, keeping remarks and questions relevant, and responding
appropriately to questions being asked.
2. Performance
Question:** Divide the class into 4 groups. Each group will hold a discussion on the
topic- “Selecting Field Day Activities”
The students will brainstorm possible activities for Field Day. The students will discuss (using pros/cons)
and then agree on six activities that would be appropriate from the ones
suggested by the group.
Assessment Tool:** 4 finger rubric: Each group will access all members in their group using the 4
Finger Rubric. One finger will be
raised if the member has demonstrated each of the following points: taking
turns, listening to others, keeping questions relevant, and responding
appropriately to questions asked.
Activity: The Human Web: Students
will review the story “City Green” (Reading Text Book pgs. 242-254) They will list the behaviors of the characters
in the story beginning with the main character and her positive behaviors and
work their way to “Old Man Hammer” who is a very negative old man. They will then list all of the activities
that were done by working together that turned the old, empty, city block into
a very beautiful, peaceful place that
all the characters can enjoy. They
should mention that by working together everything turned out for the better, even
“Old Man Hammer’s” contributions to the garden. Students will then be asked to sit in a circle in the middle
of the room . They will gently toss a
ball of yarn from one to another while still holding on to the end of the
string. Each will make a positive
statement that completes the following “My wish for the world today is__________”
(It doesn’t have to be one word--it can be a statement with many words. When each student has had input there should
be a web that connects all of the students.
Ask why a spider’s web might help us accomplish all of the wishes that
were just shared. What would happen if
just one person let go? (fall apart)
Bounce a beach ball an the entire web showing that if we all work
together the world will be a better place.
Duration: The
lesson should be completed in about 45 minutes.
