Answer: The Teacher’s Manual T347 & T365
2. Performance Question: Students will be put into groups to discuss how many ways we experience prejudice or hostility today. They will give five examples on paper with pencil. They will then be given an opportunity to go around to other groups and compare examples. They will be responsible for eliminating duplicate answers.
Assessment Tool: Teacher observation and peer assessment
Activity: Students will have their eyes covered and be asked to perform a series of tasks ranging in difficulty from least to greatest. Example: Walk straight five steps, reach your hand out and feel for the chalkboard and ledge. Feel for chalk. Pick up a piece of chalk and write your name. Turn around. Look at the students next to you. Turn back around and write the name of the person that was standing on your right on the chalkboard. Now write it on the line next to the word name on the chalkboard. * The student isn’t supposed to be able to see so performing the last two tasks should seem a lot more difficult. After everyone has a chance there will be a group discussion to answer questions. How did you feel? What did you experience? Were you thinking about what the others were thinking of you? Was it hard? and so on.
Duration: 1 hour
Resources for this activity: Students will need to bring a scarf, headband, hat, or something to cover their own eyes with from home. Make sure you have enough clear simple instructions so that each student regardless of ability gets a chance.
