Assessment Question:*

 

1.  Paper/Pencil: **After listening to the story “The Torn Heart”, students will be asked to define what a “put-down” is and what is a “put-up.”

 

     Answer:** Put-downs are ways we make someone feel bad about themselves, either with words (name-calling, teasing) or with actions (excluding someone).  Put-ups are self-esteem builders using work or actions.

 

2.  Performance Question: **Students will re-write the story and deliver a 3 minute presentation about how Pedro’s day is similar to one they may have experienced.

Activity: The Torn Heart. Students will be given a piece of red construction paper and be instructed to cut out the shape of a heart.  As the children listen to The Torn Heart” story about Pedro.  They will crinkle their red heart each time they hear a put-down.  After the story is completed, they will discuss how it would feel to be Pedro.  Students will also be asked to come up with things that could have been said or done to make Pedro feel better during the story.  Students will see that no matter how hard they try, they cannot get rid of the wrinkles/creases that were put in their heart when negatives comments were made, and they will see the importance of being positive in difficult situations.

 

Duration: _Entire Lesson should be completed in 1 hour.
