State Standard: 1.6.6.C Speak using skills appropriate to formal speech situations.

 

St. Marys Standard: In a formal speaking situation, students will recognize audience and purpose and speak using correct pronunciation, vocal variety, a set pace and a variety of sentences.

Assessment Question: In a formal speech situation what skills are necessary to speak in a proper fashion?

 

1. Paper/Pencil: Name four speaking skills that are appropriate in a formal speaking           situation.

 

Answer: Students will recognize audience and purpose use correct pronunciation, vocal variety with a set pace and a variety of sentences.

 

2. Performance Question: How can students speak using skills appropriate to a formal      speech situation?

 

Assessment Tool: Students will give a speech showing proper speech etiquette, concentrating on purpose through stress, inflection and pace.

 

Type of Assessment: Scoring Rubric, Observation, Peer evaluation

 

Activity: Ask for a few volunteer students to read aloud the RFZ "Constitution of Caring" from the scrolled paper. Explain that you will celebrate your commitment to your "Constitution" by having everyone ratify it or sign it. Now announce, "All those who can commit to our "Constitution" should say, "Yea!" or use another cheer if you've developed one. One by one have students come up to sign the "Constitution of Caring". If you have a camera take photos of students signing. Have students individually fill out and decorate their own Don't Laugh At Me Constitution of Caring pledges.
