Dear parents and guardians,
With the school year and cold and flu season in full swing, please continue to encourage frequent handwashing, use of tissues or arm to cover coughs, and the importance of not sharing drinks, utensils, or personal items with your child.
Also, please remember that a child with a fever >100 (with or without the use of a fever reducing medication) and flu-like symptoms (cough, sore throat, body aches) should be kept home until no longer feverish. Medicating a child for a fever and sending him or her to school places others at risk for infection and may not allow for the neccessary rest your child needs to fight an active infection.
In addition, please be aware that Chickenpox outbreaks continue to occur even in settings such as schools where most children are vaccinated. (CDC, 2017).
Please review the fact sheet from the PA Department of Health on Chickenpox and be sure to notify the school nurse if your child is diagnosed with or has the symptoms of chickenpox.
